BORN 1978

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is about connect and passion. Not about the standard or norm of beauty but the connection and emotion the viewer has when viewing the artworks. Challenging the fundamental views on beauty is one of the most important qualities of my artwork, second is to amplify my emotion to the large scale.

I convey my passion of emotion to the life-sized figures in my artwork. The mixture of my fancy life to reality collide which translates to the bright irregular colors of my work. I am inspired by Jackson Pollack, William de Kooning and Andy Warhol who all push the boundaries of their time and translate their views in different ways.

Every click I make on my camera. Every brushstroke I paint to the body translates my mood and passion to each piece. Capturing the love, emotion, and life is what drives me to explore the human relationships each and every day.

Story of ‘Mother I’

KOH was inspired by a mother’s true story about taking care of her own sick baby alone. The mother and baby became the models for the Mother Series. For the shooting, with the assistance of staff including a nurse, flowers and butterflies were placed on the mother and baby. The process for the work ‘Mother I’ was such a journey as every staff had to wait repeatably for the baby to wake up.

With hard work, KOH captured the powerful moment of breastfeeding and several years after the project Koh heard from the mother that the baby is growing healthy.

About ‘MOTHER’

The contemporaneity of Koh’s photographic practice resides both in form and content. As per the former, this is evinced in Koh’s modus operandi in composing his pictures via a laborious process entailing painting his figures or arranging his compositions in very detailed and precise combinations and then photographing them and printing the negative in color reversals. Lush, saturated and palpably chromatic, the dichotomy of transforming the negative into the positive print is not only a formal strategy as it also contains a conceptual approach to the photograph’s subject matter...

Mother (2016), on the other hand, is powerful too as a rendition of a kind of feminine archetype. Here, though, the mother holds in her arms a baby, and this composition is situated in the art history of mother/infant depictions often the register of the religious. Is Koh consequently offering his own interpretation of Virgin and Christ child, or possibly something more humanist and outside of organized religion but nonetheless evoking the sacred? Regardless of the permutations the work embodies in encompassing those themes, there is a nurturing quality in the positivity that Mother evokes. Yet there is also a kind of indecipherable specter that haunts this composition. Although the color combinations in Mother are energized and invigorated, there is still something subliminally unnerving in the blueish hue of the figures.
